Oil City Man Suffers Major Injuries in Two-Vehicle Crash on Route 157

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) — According to Franklin-based State Police, around 12:25 p.m. on May 24, a two-vehicle accident occurred on State Route 157, at its intersection with Horsecreek Road, in Cranberry Township, Venango County.

Police say 59-year-old Henry P. Smeltzer, of Irwin, and 63-year-old Gerald W. Bickel, of Oil City, were involved in the collision.

According to police, Smeltzer was traveling north on Horsecreek Road and Bickel was traveling west on SR 157 at its 4-way intersection. As Bickel was crossing the intersection, Smeltzer failed to stop/yield his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado on Horsecreek Road at its flashing red light and subsequently struck Bickel’s 2003 Jeep Liberty in the middle of SR 157.

Smeltzer suffered minor injuries.

Bickel suffered major injuries.

Both men were transported to UPMC Northwest for medical treatment.

Both were using seat belts.

Smeltzer was charged with a traffic violation.

Venango County Community Ambulance and Seneca Fire Department assisted at the scene.
