| October 24, 2014

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – The Oil City Police Department is warning the public of fines and imprisonment for disturbing or taunting bears in the area.

Police are investigating incidents of persons disturbing and taunting the bears that have been coming into the residential and business areas in the Plummer Street and Grandview area of Oil City.

Police remind the public that this is an extremely dangerous practice to get close to the bears and taunt them.

There is a mother bear with cubs, and this makes it an even more dangerous situation, according to police.

The public is also reminded that if they are caught disturbing game or wildlife, they are committing a summary offense of the first degree under the Game Code Title 34 Section 2162(a) that is punishable by a fine of not less than $1,000.00 and not more than $1,500.00 and offenders can be imprisoned for a period of 90 days, police say.

The Oil City Police are committed to making the public safe and will be enforcing this section by the issuance of citations or arrests.

If the bears cause a public safety situation, call the Oil City Police Department immediately at 814-678-3080, otherwise, they are to be left alone.
