Oil City YMCA Member Swims 1,000 Miles

| June 10, 2018

OIL CITY, Pa. – Oil City YMCA member Robert Conlan knows what it means to work hard and set goals.  Conlan, 75,  recently met a big goal of swimming 1,000 miles at the Oil City YMCA.

Conlan has been a member at the Oil City YMCA for twelve years and attends regularly.  His normal routine is a one-mile swim three days a week, but he is also active on the YMCA Board of Directors and on the YMCA Masters Swim Team.

Conlan has participated in eight swim challenges over the years and has supported a number of other YMCA functions and activities.

“I first set a goal to swim the length of the Allegheny River, which is 354 miles,” said Conlan.  “After I met that goal, I decided to try to reach 1,000 miles.”

Staying connected to people has been the biggest draw to attending the YMCA, but Conlan noted that having a big goal was part of his motivation to get to the Y and swim three days a week.  Being a part of the Masters Swim Team, the YMCA’s competitive adult swim team, gave him even more motivation.

“I’m looking forward to starting on the next 1,000 miles,” said Conlan, who has obviously learned that big goals provide the motivation he needs to get up and head to the YMCA.
