Oil City’s Cole Finalist for Erie Times-News Varsity Cup Male Athlete of the Year

ERIE, Pa. (EYT) — After a sensational senior year that saw him set the District 10 record for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns as well as excel in track & field, Oil City’s Christian Cole is a finalist for the Erie Times-News Varsity Cup Male Athlete of the Year.

The Male Athlete of the Year will be announced during the Best of Varsity Cup dinner June 26, 2019, at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pa.

Setting the District 10 single-season rushing record with 3,252 yards and the D10 rushing touchdown mark with 46, Cole helped lead Oil City to its first District 10 title (Class 5A) in 20 years. He rushed for 200 or more yards 10 times in 12 games including five 300-yard games with a career-high 383 yards rushing vs, Meadville.

In track & field, Cole was the District 10 Class 3A champion in the 100-meter dash and took second in the 200-meter dash.

In baseball, Cole was named a second-team All-Region 6 performer as an outfielder.

The other seven finalists for the award include Hickory’s Brock Grundy, Erie McDowell’s William Jeffress, Erie Cathedral Prep’s Billy Lucas and Carter Starocci, Grove City’s Jonah Powell, Kennedy Catholic’s Oscar Tshiebwe, and Farrell’s Kyi Wright.
