Oil City’s Cole Franklin’s Haynes, Johnson, Named All-State in Football

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Franklin’s Ian Haynes and Brandon Johnson and Oil City’s Christian Cole were named Class 5A All-State by the Pennsylvania Football Writers/Broadcasters Tuesday.

Haynes and Johnson teamed up to become a record-setting quarterback/wide receiver duo for the nights, while Cole was a force on the ground for the Oilers.

Haynes, only a sophomore, threw for 2,931 yards and 29 touchdowns this season while going 155 of 307 with 15 interceptions. He added a pair of rushing scores as well.

Johnson, a senior, set the District 10 record — which was later broken — with 1,500 receiving yards on 64 catches with 17 touchdowns.

Cole, a junior, ran for 1,718 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Oilers on 275 carries while adding six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to the Franklin and Oil City players named All-State other area players earning the honor include Clarion-Limestone’s Brendan Makray (quarterback) and Kyle Kerle (wide receiver) in Class 1A and Grove City’s Logan Lutz (athlete) and Joe Kosick (linebacker).

Makray was the second-leading passer in District 9 this season throwing for 2,785 yards and 34 touchdowns. Going 145 of 243, Makray also threw 11 interceptions, and his 193.1 quarterback rating led the District.

Kerle was Makray’s leading receiver and the second-leading receiver in District 9. He had a school-record 1,165 yards receiving on 45 catches with 14 touchdowns.

Lutz ran for 765 yards and six touchdowns and caught 62 passes for 858 yards and 10 scores for the Eagles, while Kosick averaged 7.9 tackles per game with a sack and two fumbles recovered.
