One Dead, One Seriously Injured in ATV Crash

PERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – Police say one man was killed and another seriously injured in an ATV crash that occurred in Perry Township, Mercer County on Saturday.

According to Mercer-based State Police, the crash occurred around 2:47 p.m. on Saturday on Smith Road just north of Beatty School Road in Perry Township.

Police 23-year old Cody R. Downs, of Jackson Center, was operating a 2018 Polaris Sportsman XP1000 when he lost control of the vehicle due to traveling too fast for the roadway.

According to police, the vehicle then traveled off the north side of the roadway and struck a large tree stump.

Both Downs and his passenger, 23-year old Douglas E. Hawks, of Sandy Lake, were ejected from the vehicle on impact.

Downs was pronounced dead at the scene by Mercer County Coroner John Libonati.

Hawks suffered serious injuries and was flown from the scene by STAT MedEvac helicopter.

Officials noted neither man was wearing a helmet.
