TIONESTA, Pa. (EYT) — The PA Firefly Festival is hosting a special presentation on the “Economic Benefits from Unexpected Source: Firesflies” on Wednesday, June 21.

The event begins at 6:00 p.m. at the West Forest High School gym located on State Route 62, just north of Tionesta.

As a special feature, the evening’s program starts with a screening of the 12-minute documentary film, “Brilliant Darkness: Hotaru in the Night” by The Zoological Lighting Institute, introduced by producer Dr. James Fisher.

Guest speakers are as follows:

– Dr. Sara Lewis, author of “Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies”

– Dr. Lewis, a biology researcher at Tufts University

The speakers will explore the positive economic impact fireflies can have on our region and will offer guidance on handling the double-edged sword of firefly ecotourism.

A book signing will follow Dr. Lewis’ multi-media presentation and audience Q&A.

This event is arranged by the PA Firefly Festival Inc. (PAFF), a local nonprofit whose mission is both educational and scientific.

Other attractions of the evening are a 50/50 drawing and basket raffle, thanks to the Tionesta Lions Club.

There will be firefly exhibits, and PAFF merchandise and Dr. Lewis’ books will be on sale.

The June 21 program is made possible by the generosity of Forest County sponsors and PAFF supporters.
