FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — A Franklin boy who was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma in 2017 will be holding a lemonade stand fundraiser called Philip’s Pay-It-Forward during Franklin Area High School’s September 20 home football game against Fort LeBoeuf.

The stand will offer lemonade and baked goods for a donation to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).
The ALSF helped fund a clinical trial that Philip Steigerwald, son of Jeff and Wendy Steigerwald, of Franklin, participated in, leading to a determination of no evidence of disease on August 23, 2018. In February 2017, Philip was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma. In May 2017, it appeared there was no medical hope, as the chemotherapy treatments Philip underwent made no progress to eradicate the cancer.

Philip’s treatment began at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and then moved to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where the clinical trial was held. Through a TV interview for an ALSF telethon, the Steigerwalds learned the ALSF provided funding for the trial.

Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed shortly before her first birthday with neuroblastoma. At four years old, she held her first fundraiser for childhood cancer in her front yard. At the time of her death at the age of eight years old in 2004, Alex raised $1 million. The ALSF has funded nearly 1000 research projects at 135 institutions in the U.S. and Canada and has supported many families.

The event is being held in conjunction with Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month which is being held through the end of September.

In addition to the event at the football game, there will also be another lemonade stand fundraiser to benefit the ALSF during the Applefest car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 6 in front of Callaghan’s Pharmacy on Liberty Street.
