LEEPER, Pa. (EYT) – Car Mate Trailers and PennDOT, along with Pennsylvania State Police and local officials, conducted a Trailer Safety Education Day on Tuesday, June 5.

Car Mate President Greg Snyder and Marketing Director George Karg welcomed attendees, including dealers, and Megan Ryan, a representative of NATM, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers.

PSP and a Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer reviewed some of the current laws regarding and enforcement activities. There are approximately 75 to 80 inspectors throughout Pennsylvania.

Snyder said Car Mate held its first ever education day as part of National Trailer Safety Week June 3 to June 9. In addition to information sessions and question and answer periods, a tour of the Car Mate facilities was also offered.

Car Mate has been a member of NATM for 25 years.

Car Mate sells almost 4,000 trailers per year and produces annual revenue of approximately $13 million, according to Snyder.

The company has 78 employees.

“We sell them as far as where anyone will take them,” said Snyder.  “Generally, Michigan is as about as far west, we’re working on a dealer in North Carolina, and north to eastern Canada.”

However, they also have made deliveries to Florida and Colorado. All trailers are sold through a network of dealers.

Established in 1982, Car Mate is the name synonymous with quality and longevity when it comes to enclosed cargo and open utility, and equipment — “Trailers that work for a living.”  Car Mate is the brand preferred by contractors of all types, municipalities, landscaping businesses, real estate agencies, home builders, motorcycle enthusiasts, individual owners and more, according to the company website at https://carmate-trailers.com.

Car Mate Trailers are handcrafted from the ground up from the in-house welded structural steel frame, the PPG primer and paint, the wood stud or steel tube frame walls, the .030 aluminum exterior, and the .032 1-piece seamless aluminum roof.

“NATM is the only trade association for manufacturers of light and medium duty trailers (under 26,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and suppliers to the industry,” said Ryan.

“For the last 30 years, NATM has worked to improve the safety of America’s roadways. Its most concentrated safety efforts have been through its compliance verification program which verifies that NATM member trailer manufacturer companies have the manufacturing process in place to build trailers that meet federal regulations and industry best practices, as well as providing members with technical and educational resources. More recently, an ATM has expanded its efforts to educate trailer dealers and end users about safety towing practices.”

Although the law requires that all trailer manufacturers comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, not all US trailer manufacturing companies use a third party inspection body to verify compliance. NATM members currently manufacture an estimated 80 percent of trailers put on the nation’s roadways each year.
