PennDOT Focuses on Highway Safety, Highlights Law Awareness Week

| February 24, 2015

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Acting Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Secretary Leslie S. Richards said yesterday the agency is drawing attention to often overlooked rules of the road during Highway Safety Law Awareness Week that started Sunday.

“We are constantly working to create awareness for drivers of rules that keep them, fellow drivers and our road workers safe,” Secretary Richards said. ”Through education and outreach, we will use this week to elevate the importance of laws that drivers may overlook.”

Here are laws that motorists may not be aware of:

– “Keep Right Pass Left” focuses on the safety of passing only on the left and not remaining in the left lane as a travel lane.

– The “Steer Clear Law” reminds drivers to move over or slow down for police, emergency responders, road crews and tow-truck operators while they carry out their duties.

– “Headlights on, Wipers On” requires that all vehicles should have their headlights and wipers on when operating in inclement weather.

– “Clear vehicles of ice and snow” reminds drivers that their cars should be fully clear before winter travel. If snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury, the operator of the source vehicle is subject to a fine of $200 to $1,000 for each offense.
