HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania has been recognized as one of the top states in the nation for its use of digital technologies to better serve citizens, save money and achieve policy goals, according to the Center for Digital Government’s 2010 Digital States Survey.

“Three years ago, Governor Rendell placed the Office of Administration in charge of overseeing the strategic direction of the commonwealth’s IT operations,” said Secretary of Administration Christian Soura. “As a result, our state government has been able to save money and improve services to citizens and agencies through IT consolidation and shared services, as well as enhanced policies and governance, all of which are reflected in our performance on the Digital States Survey.”

The Digital States Survey is a comprehensive, biennial study that examines best practices, policies and progress made by state governments in information technology. The 2010 survey focused on results achieved by states in the face of the recession, budget cuts and increased demand for services.

“It’s an honor for Pennsylvania to be recognized on a national stage such as this,” said Brenda Orth, Chief Information Officer for the commonwealth.  “It is also a testament to the talented and dedicated technology professionals working for the commonwealth.”

This year’s survey assigned letter grades to each state. Overall, Pennsylvania earned an A-, one of the four highest grades given, and tied with Virginia. On specific sections of the survey, Pennsylvania was ranked second for its leadership position in information and communications technology and fifth in health and human services.

On the previous survey, which assigned rankings to each state, Pennsylvania placed 10^th in a tie with Tennessee.
