According to City Manager Mark Schroyer, the Mitchell Avenue playground refurbishing project recently completed Phase One of the plans for this summer.

“The equipment there was old wood and tire structures that were the norm for the mid-80s, but they were well past their useful life,” Schroyer told

The first phase of the project consisted of the removal of the old equipment and the installation of a number of new pieces of equipment.

Schroyer noted the new equipment includes new state-of-the-art swingsets, a particular playground piece geared toward the two- to five-year-old age group, and something particularly special: a zip line where kids can hang from an apparatus and zip from one end to the other.

With the first phase completed, the city is now preparing to move forward on the second phase.

For the second phase, the city applied to a PNC grand program, seeking a $40,000.00 grant to purchase another large piece of playground equipment that would be geared to the five- to twelve-year-old age group.

According to Schroyer, although the playground is set up for all age groups, the new layout will be somewhat like the layout in the Land of Laughter playground, which was refurbished last year; it will have some of the equipment divided by the intended age groups.

“That way kids can kind of play more with their same age group,” Schroyer noted.

The Land of Laughter Playground, which was completely refurbished last year, was originally built in the 1990s through efforts of community volunteers and community fundraising. It was the first of many playground projects the city has been considering.

“We’re looking at refurbishing all playgrounds at some point in near future,” Schroyer said.

“However, these projects are expensive, so we’ll be looking at the other playgrounds as the money and time permit.”
