ERIE COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — Erie-based State Police say a fatal vehicle crash involving a PSP Girard patrol unit occurred this morning in Fairview Township, Erie County.

The Pennsylvania State Police — Troop E, Erie, along with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office and the Erie County Coroner’s Office are investigating a fatal crash involving a PSP Girard patrol unit.

Police say at approximately 3:34 a.m. on July 5, Trooper Frederick Schimp was operating a 2013 Ford Explore Police Utility vehicle with passenger Trooper Garrett Padasak westbound on Sterrettania Road.

As the patrol unit approached the intersection with State Route 98, the preliminary investigation shows that it failed to stop and proceeded directly into the intersection where it was struck in the left frontal area by a northbound vehicle, a 2012 Suzuki Kizashi that was operated by 57-year-old Donna Platz, of Edinboro, according to police.

Police say the patrol unit was not responding to a call at the time of the crash.

Platz was pronounced dead at the scene by Erie County Coroner Lyle Cook at 4:45 a.m.

The two troopers from PSP Girard were cut from the vehicle by Fairview Fire Department and transported to UPMC Hamot Trauma Unit with moderate injuries.

All involved were using seat belts at the time of the crash.

A Pennsylvania State Police Collision and Accident Reconstruction Specialist from Troop Erie Headquarters is assigned the investigation.

The vehicles were removed from the scene and taken to PSP Erie HQ for processing.

Further information will be released as it becomes available, according to police.
