Donna Smith-Red CrossSHARPSVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Donna Smith, of Sharpsville, recently joined the American Red Cross Western Pennsylvania Region as a new Volunteer Specialist.

She is responsible for the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers in Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango Counties.

“The Red Cross relies on local volunteers to assist area residents who have been impacted by disasters big and small,” noted Rex Rossey, American Red Cross Western Pennsylvania Regional Volunteer Services Officer. “Donna’s knowledge of the area will be instrumental in her ability to grow our volunteer base.”

Volunteers make up over 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce.

While most people think of Red Cross volunteers as the people who assist families following home fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disaster situations, people are also needed to support area blood drives, offer services to our nation’s military members, their families, and veterans, and assist with public affairs, to name just a few.

“I am excited to join the American Red Cross,” Smith said. “I feel it will be very rewarding to be able to support the services and programs of the Red Cross by helping to recruit volunteers that will ultimately make a positive impact in the lives of those who live in our communities.”
