Richard L. “Rick” Downing

Richard L. “Rick” Downing, 69, of Oil City, passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife by his side, Sunday, March 24, 2019, at his home after a 4 ½ year battle with cancer.

Born September 21, 1949, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Robert and Lucy Jane Russell Downing.

After graduating from Oil City High School in 1969, Rick went on to work at the Oil City glass plant, Koppers, Oilwell Supply, and eventually retired from Conair in Franklin in 2005.

Rick enjoyed participating in sports and was a member of several softball, darts, and pool leagues, as well as the Oil City Eagles and PNA.

His passion in life was for the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He loved hunting rabbits with his beagles, taking float trips down the river, and volunteered to help kids fish on the first day of trout season and also at the Coon and Fox for Big Uncle Day where he’d supply most of the fishing poles and bait. Rick is fondly remembered as encouraging kids to “kiss the fish” before they released it.

Mr. Downing was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

On September 5, 1970, he was married to the love of his life, the former Susan Riley who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Scott Downing of Bellevue; two daughters, Tammy Sullivan and her husband Jim of Fort Mill, SC, and Leslie Gonze and her husband Christian of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Brad and Jubilee Downing, Riley Sullivan, and Liam Gonze; and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Hayzle.

Also surviving are two brothers, William Downing and his wife Patty of Davie, FL, and John Downing and his wife Sue of Oil City; and a sister, Shirley Gharing and her husband Keith of Dempseytown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Downing, and a brother-in-law, Dennis Persing, Sr.

Friends will be received at the Morrison Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 11:00 a.m.
