MERCER COUNTY, Pa. – On behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett, PennDOT has announced a project that will replace an 80-year-old structurally deficient bridge on Route 58 in Mercer County.

When completed, the project will offer motorists on Route 58 a smoother ride on a sound, modern bridge over Moury Run in Hempfield Township, Mercer County.

The bridge is located 343 feet south of Methodist Road (Route 4019) and a half mile north of Gruber Road.

The existing 29-foot-long, steel I-beam bridge was built in 1933 and underwent reconstruction work in 1989. On average, approximately 4,972 vehicles a day use the bridge.

Work will include construction of a new 44-foot-long pre-stressed composite spread box beam bridge, concrete bridge approach slabs and paved roadway approaches along with updated drainage, guiderails and pavement markings.

The contractor is Shingledecker’s Welding, Inc. of Franklin, Pa. The contract cost is $497,540.76. Construction costs will be paid with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.

The existing bridge is scheduled to close June 3. Work on the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.

During construction a detour will be posted using Kidds Mill Road (Route 4012) and Route 18.
