Ruth M. Mathews

Ruth M. Mathews, of Marion Township, Harrisville, passed away on Thursday morning, Dec. 28, 2017, following an extended illness. She was 88.

Ruth was born in Homestead, (Allegheny County) on June 25, 1929, to George H. and Lucy E. (Schweinber) Matthews.

She married Raymond Mathews on March 21, 1949; he preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 2015.

She grew up in Munhall and was a 1947 graduate of Munhall High School.

Ruth was a supportive wife and mother throughout her husband’s football career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1950s and coaching and professional career thereafter.

Together they returned to Western PA in 1978 and purchased both the former Pines Restaurant in Springfield Township, now known as My Brother’s Place, and a farm in Marion Township, Butler County, that they lived with their family and farmed and raised horses.

Ruth was a member the Barkeyville United Methodist Church and enjoyed her family and friends.

She is survived by five children, Catherine Wilson, Harrisville; Ray (Pam) Mathews Jr., Branford, Conn.; John (Mary) Mathews, Harrisville; Timothy L. (Shelley) Mathews, Mercer; and Jenny (Mark) Pryor, Mercer; 10 grandchildren, Tabitha Wilson, Mathew Wilson, Bret Wilson, Myra Odenwaelder, Amanda Mock, Bobby Mathews, Raychelle Pedersen, Justine Ferguson, Lucas Pryor and Logan Pryor; and ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul R. (Colleen) Matthews, Irwin, Pa.
In addition to her parents and husband, a sister, Lois Tucker and three brothers, George, David and Glenn Matthews, preceded Ruth in death.

Calling hours are from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.

Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be held at Prairie Cemetery in Harrisville.
