Second-Quarter Let Down Costs Rocky Grove in PIAA Playoff Opener

PITTSBURGH (EYT) – In three of the four quarters of Saturday’s PIAA Class 2A boys’ basketball first-round contest at Northgate High School, Rocky Grove played right with if not outplayed WPIAL champion Sewickley Academy.

But a bad second quarter for the Orioles cost them in a 60-47 defeat that ended a once-promising season for Rocky Grove with a third consecutive loss.

Rocky Grove (21-5) led 16-10 after a quarter of play but were outscored 18-2 in the second quarter to go down 28-18 at halftime.

Sewickley Academy (22-4) only outscored the Orioles by three, 32-29, in the second half.

Tyler Davis capped a fantastic career with a team-high 19 points for Rocky Grove with Travis Perry adding 17.

Nate Ridgeway paced Sewickley Academy with 22 points, David Groetsch added 15 points and Justin Pryor 14.
