Shirley J. Burgard

Shirley J. Burgard, 76, a resident of Chestnut Street, Franklin, died peacefully Friday morning, May 25, 2018, shortly after her arrival in the emergency department of UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born May 18, 1942 in Franklin, a beloved daughter of the late: Fred C. and Nettie Hilliard Johnson.

Shirley had worked for many years as a cook at the former Grandview Convalescent Home of Franklin and at the former Franklin Hospital.

She was a former member of The Franklin Women of the Moose and the Ladies Auxiliary of The Eagles Club in Franklin, as her health permitted.

Shirley was an avid bowler, having bowled with many area leagues, earning many trophies through the years. She enjoyed following the seasons of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Cleveland Cavalier Basketball. Most important to her always was her family. She enjoyed the fun times that they shared and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren.

She was married to Sherman E. Engles, who preceded her in death on March 2, 1975. She then married Charles R. “Chook” Burgard, who preceded her in death on September 2, 2012.

Shirley is survived by her children: Cheryl A. Engles of Grove City, Jeff S. Engles and his wife Christina of Oil City, Teresa M. Diggans and her husband John of Pittsburgh, Missy Burgard-Kellam and her husband H. L. of Pungoteague, VA and Beth M. Burgard of Oil City; in addition to her grandchildren: Bethany Exley, Kelsey Engles, Delaney Engles, Brady Engles, Charles “Chaz” Carson, Kathryn Carson, Cecelia Carson, Kinsey Kellam, Cobin Kellam and Micheal John O’Polka, II.

Shirley is also survived by her sister, Catherine I. Shawgo of Franklin; her “adopted daughters”: Emma Keck and Diana Bussey; a special nephew, Fred Shawgo and special nieces: Patty Attinger and Kathy King; in addition to many other loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to both husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Engles; a sister, Lois Ace and by her brother, Robert Johnson.

Friends may call Wednesday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk Street, Franklin.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.

Private interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery.
