Shirley L. Shirey Whitling

Shirley L. Shirey Whitling, 76, of Oil City, went to be with her Lord at 7:21 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Born February 17, 1937 in Van, she was the daughter of the late John Leroy and Angeline Culp O’Neil.

She was married July 29, 1955 to Karl Alan Shirey and he preceded her in death on February 10, 2001. She later married a long-time family friend, Norman H. Whitling and he preceded her in death on October 11, 2011.

Mrs. Whitling attended the Galloway United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Venango County R.S.V.P., and was involved in the outreach and visitation ministries at the Golden Living Center, Presbyterian Home, and UPMC Northwest Hospital.

Mrs. Whitling is survived by two daughters, Patricia Switzer and husband Chris of Seneca and Pamela Hartzell and husband Alan of Seneca; two sons, Karl Shirey of Oil City and Daniel Shirey and his wife Kimberley of Oil City; a step-daughter, Norma Jean Ferringer of Oil City; nine grandchildren, Kelli Yost and husband Aaron of Seneca, Daniel Switzer and wife Jackie of Williamsport, Zachary Hartzell and wife Kara of Oil City, Andrea McCauley and husband Michael of Oil City, Travis, Ashleigh, and Josiah Hartzell of Seneca, and Alexa and Robert Shirey of Oil City; two step-grandchildren, Michael and Mark Ferringer of Florida; and eight great-grandchildren, Tytus, Kaylee, and Zayden Hartzell, Noah and Isaac Yost, and Jacob, Maria, and Micah McCauley.

Also surviving are three sisters, Freda Moyer of Oil City, Susan Lineman of Cranberry, and Kay Gilmore of Lucinda; a brother, Russell O’Neil and wife Nancy of Florida; a very special friend, Maxine Hellem of Oil City; a sister-in-law, Roberta O’Neil of Knox, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, William, John, Daniel, and Merl O’Neil, and a sister, Mary Henderson.

At Mrs. Whitling’s request, there will be no visitation or public services held.

Private committal services and interment will be held for the immediate family in Brandon Cemetery, Cranberry.

The Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc. of Seneca, Cranberry Township is completing funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Galloway U.M. Church (Wheelchair Mission Fund), 196 Seysler Road, Franklin, PA 16323; or to a charity of one’s choice.
