FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — James Speth will be the Republican nominee for Sugarcreek Borough 5 council.

Speth and incumbent Robert Resinger tied in the primary election for the nomination with 91 votes each. Resinger led 90-88 on election night but Speth had three write-in votes to Resinger’s one.

The tie meant that the candidates drew lots at noon Friday at the Venango County Courthouse Annex, and Speth was declared the winner after the drawing of the lots according to Gerry McGuinness, the Venango County Voter Registrar who also helps out in elections.

Speth will run unopposed in the November general election barring a third-party or independent candidate — the deadline for independent candidates to file is Aug. 1 — because there was no candidate on the Democratic ballot and none of the 10 write-in candidates received the necessary 10 write-in votes.
