WARREN CO., Pa. (EYT) — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting that occurred Friday night at the intersection of Routes 6 and 59, in Mead Township, Warren County.

According to Warren-based State Police, around 7:30 p.m. on August 4, Warren City Police were contacted regarding a maroon colored Jeep driving erratically in the city of Warren.

Police say a Warren City Police Officer operating a marked patrol car located the vehicle and followed it across the Glade Bridge where he attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle traveled down the road a short distance and pulled into the Dairy Delite parking lot at the intersection of Routes 6 and 59 in Mead Township. Numerous patrons were at the Dairy Delite at the time of the stop.

According to police, the officer approached the vehicle and began his contact with the operator. During the stop, the driver of the Jeep — later identified as 54-year-old Joseph Miller, of Clarendon — became agitated and began loading an AK-47 rifle which was present in the vehicle. The officer backed away while issuing verbal commands. The suspect ignored the commands and continued to load the weapon. As the suspect exited the vehicle with the weapon, the officer discharged his sidearm, striking and killing the suspect. No innocent bystanders were injured at the scene. The officer was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.

PSP is conducting the investigation with the cooperation of the Warren City Police Department, the Warren County District Attorney’s Office, and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

Clarendon Volunteer Fire Department, Glade Volunteer Fire Department, and Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
