State Police Release Details on Fatal Crash in Scrubgrass Township

SCRUBGRASS TWP., Pa. (EYT) – State police have released details on a fatal accident that occurred on January 2 on Interstate 80 in Scrubgrass Township.

According to Franklin-based State Police, this crash occurred around 3:44 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, as a 2007 Sterling commercial vehicle was traveling eastbound in the right lane on I-80 in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County.

Police say for unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway striking the guide rail on the south side of the eastbound lanes of I-80. The vehicle then traveled down a large embankment while still heading in an easterly direction and then struck four small trees before striking a ditch and the embankment on the south side of the ditch.

The vehicle came to its final place of rest with the cab facing north on its passenger side.

Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh pronounced the operator — 48-year-old Christopher T. Hampton, of Burnham, Mifflin County, Pa., deceased on the scene around 6:30 a.m.

He was using a seat belt.

The right lane in the eastbound direction of I-80 was closed for approximately two hours; traffic was able to proceed through the left lane of travel in the eastbound direction of I-80.

Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department, Emlenton Volunteer Fire Department, and PennDOT assisted at the scene with traffic control and clean up.

The vehicle was moved from the scene at a later time by Hovis Towing.
