ERIE, Pa. (EYT) — Troop E Erie Pennsylvania State Police say statistics highlight the need for safe driving during the 4th of July holiday, when troopers will be targeting aggressive driving and DUIs.

Motorists should slow down and pay attention because they are at an increased risk during the time around the 4th of July holiday, say troopers from the Erie State Police, and the statistics back that up.

Last year a total of 695 crashes killed eight people and injured 247. Of those crashes, 72 were alcohol related.

This is why state police encourage safe driving and step up enforcement during this time period. Last year they issued over 9,600 speeding citations during the four days surrounding the holiday.

State police encourage motorists to slow down, buckle up, and have a designated driver if they choose to consume alcohol.
