State Police Warn Public of Computer Scam in Clintonville

CLINTONVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Franklin-based State Police say a computer scam occurred Monday afternoon on Emlenton Street in Clintonville Borough, Venango County.

According to police, this incident occurred around 1:29 p.m. on Monday, June 25, as an unknown suspect called the victim and identified himself as a representative from an anti-virus company.

The suspect advised the victim that her computer had been hacked and directed her to purchase a Google Play gift card in the amount of $200.00 to pay him to clear her computer out. The victim purchased the Google Play gift card and provided the numbers to the suspect. The victim also provided the suspect with numbers on her computer which enabled him to hack into it.

The victim — a 58-year-old Clintonville woman — is out $200.00, and she had to have her computer wiped out by Microsoft to prevent further hacking.

Anyone with similar incidents is warned that this is a scam.
