Superstitious, Who Me?

Stanley Cup HatsSHIPPENVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – Superstitious – who me?

Nah. Well, okay, maybe a little. Okay, well – maybe a lot.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are Stanley Cup Champions for the second straight year, and nothing I did is the reason why. Except my brain tells me differently.

Going into Game Five on Thursday, I had a bad feeling. I just thought the Nashville Predators had the Penguins’ number.

On my way home from a pair of PIAA quarterfinal baseball/softball games in the New Castle area, I debated turning the game on when I got home.

Well, I pulled into the driveway just before puck drop and did a couple of things before deciding to see what the score was.

It was 1-0 Penguins.

I looked at my wife and said, “Geez, I’m not sure I should turn the game on.”

Then, I walked across the house to my mancave. I checked the score again, and now it was 2-0.

This time I said to my wife, “There is no way I can turn this game on now.”

And, I didn’t. I followed it on the NHL app on my phone. All the way up until it was 6-0. That’s when I figured it was safe to turn it on, so I did.

Then on Friday, I got the best news possible, for perhaps the dumbest reason – Clarion’s baseball team and DuBois Central Catholic’s softball team were both scheduled to play semifinal PIAA games at North Allegheny High School on Monday.

Why was that good news?

It was good news because I am superstitious. And, when the Penguins won Game Six in San Jose last year, it was a Sunday night. And, where was I headed the next day? – North Allegheny High School for a pair of PIAA semifinal games – Moniteau softball and DCC softball.

So, the stage was perfectly set.

Now, the next question was, should I watch the game on Sunday? How should I approach it?

First things first. I made sure I went out to get something to eat and timed coming back to my house just as the puck dropped, just like in Game Five.

Then, I followed the same routine as I did in Game Five. This time, however, the Penguins didn’t score right away. But, I kept just watching on my phone. Then as the game moved into late in the third period and was scoreless, I decided I needed to change things up.

So, I turned the game on. And yes, within three minutes Patric Hornqvist scored. And then the empty-net goal followed. And then the celebration started.

And, I celebrated just as hard as they did. Although I did nothing to win the Cup, I am sure I am not the only one in the Penguins fan base to have a superstitious thought process that helped them win.

And, you know what? That is perfectly okay.

We, as fans might not actually “do” anything to help our teams win. But, it’s okay that we feel like we do.
