Thurman “Uncle Jay” Stallsmith

Thurman StallsmithOn Friday, May 19, 2017, Thurman “Uncle Jay” Stallsmith of Clarion, went to join his fellow drivers and friends after a brief battle with cancer.

Born March 28, 1949 in Crawford County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Bertha Carrier Stallsmith.

Jay served in the United States Coast Guard from 1969 to 1973 and was stationed at Cape Hatteras. He was a member of the American Legion of Clarion.

He was an avid firefighter out east before moving to the Clarion area.

Jay’s love for children brought him to his career in bus driving with Country Tails Bus Company and Mauthe Busing.

For many years, he enjoyed helping with the Tempest Drill Team of Knox.

He also enjoyed his extended family and friends’ backyard “get togethers” at the Bauer residence.

Those who had the opportunity to meet Jay knew of his helpfulness and kindness.

Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer (Chad) DePew of Madison Township; three sons: Jason Stallsmith of Urbana, Illinois; Brian Stallsmith of Tampa, Florida and Scott Stallsmith of Lakeland, Florida and a step son, Leonard ‘Dale” Bohon also of Lakeland, Florida.

Jay is also survived by two grandchildren, Caitlyn and Justin DePew of Madison Township; a brother, Glen Chaney of Warren, Ohio; sister, Leona Boyer of Warren, Ohio and his extended family: Barb Bauer and Jessica Stucke of Clarion; Sandi Henry of Clarion and Tabitha, Eric, Ethan and Hayley VanDyke of Leeper.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Paul, Clarence and Richard Chaney and two extended family members, Frank Bauer and Mark Bell.

At Jay’s request, there will be a memorial service at a later date.
