SUGARCREEK BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) — Police say charges are pending after a traffic stop in Reno on Friday evening led to the discovery of 33 grams of marijuana.

Around 7:03 p.m. on Friday, March 27, Lt. Baker of the Sugarcreek Borough Police Department was on patrol in Reno when he observed a cigarette being tossed from the passenger side window of a vehicle.

Lt. Baker radioed in the license plate information and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle at the Kwik Fill gas station on State Route 8.

According to police, when Lt. Baker approached the driver and requested her registration, license, and insurance card, he noted an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. He then requested identification from everyone in the vehicle, and informed the driver she was stopped because of someone throwing a cigarette from the passenger side. The front seat passenger then admitted to throwing the cigarette.

Police say when Lt. Baker advised the vehicle occupants that he could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle, one of the passengers, identified as Jerry Brown, grabbed his right front pants pocket. He then allegedly pulled out a “vape pen” and admitted it contained marijuana.

Officer Johnson then joined Lt. Baker at the scene.

According to the police report, when Lt. Baker had the driver get out to be checked, Brown then reached in his right front pants pocket again, and pulled out a small red bag with a zippered end that contained a small amount of marijuana and a digital scale. Brown was then asked to exit the vehicle to be searched, and $160.00 cash was also found in his right front pants pocked.

The report states the front seat passenger was also asked to exit the vehicle for a search, as well as another rear seat passenger. Lt. Baker then also checked the book bag Brown was holding, and found a plastic jar with approximately 33 grams of marijuana inside.

Police say Brown was arraigned through District Court 28-3-01 and was released on $30,000.00 unsecured bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, April 8.
