Traveling Workers’ Memorial on Display in Venango County

| March 24, 2018

FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) – The state Department of Transportation traveling Workers’ Memorial is on display at the Venango County Maintenance Building located at 1460 Pittsburgh Road, Franklin.

The memorial will remain in Franklin until Tuesday, April 3.

The memorial includes 88 posts, one for each PennDOT employee who died in the line of duty since 1970, including Robert E. Gensimore formerly of Blair County.

Gensimore died earlier this year after being struck by a vehicle as he was setting flares at a crash site.

The display was created by PennDOT employees to draw attention to the need for safe driving through work zones. Each post in the memorial is topped with a hard hat and draped in safety vest.

Each bears the name of an employee, as well as the month and year of their death.

It was brought to Venango County in conjunction with an employee safety training held in preparation for the upcoming construction and maintenance season.

Members of the public are invited to park in the front lot of the PennDOT building and walk to the yard to view the memorial.

As the weather continues to warm up, motorists expect to see more work zones pop up across the region.

Drivers who encounter a work zone should tip the following tips in mind for their safety and the safety of the highway workers:

– Drive the posted work zone speed limit.
– Stay alert and pay close attention to signs and flaggers.
– Turn on headlights when instructed by signs.
– Maintain a safe distance around vehicles; don’t tailgate.
– Use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly.
– Avoid distractions, including cell phones.
– Always buckle up.
– Expect the unexpected.
– Be patient.
