FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — An investigation into money missing from the Franklin Central Elementary School PTO fund has lead to the arrest of the organization’s treasurer.

Cynthia Louise Deluca, 56, of Franklin, was arraigned on one felony count of Theft by Unlawful taking Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Matthew T. Kirtland.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Franklin City Police Detective Kevin J. Saragian, the investigation was initiated on August 28 after Central Elementary School Principal Gary Canfora contacted police to report that DeLuca had stolen money from the school’s PTO fund.

On September 1, Canfora told Detective Saragian that he had received a written confession in which DeLuca allegedly admitted that she stole money from the fund.

The alleged confession and additional statements from PTO President Bridget Wood were logged into evidence by Detective Saragian.

DeLuca also admitted to stealing money from the fund during a September 7 interview with Detective Saragian at the Franklin Police Department, according to the criminal complaint.

The criminal complaint states that DeLuca admitted to stealing funds by withdrawing money from the organization’s bank account, taking money from fundraisers, and stealing cash.

DeLuca told Detective Saragian she was unsure of the total amount stolen from the PTO fund.

Detective Saragian then met with Wood who was familiar with the financial reports for the 2016-2017 school year and the two concluded that DeLuca embezzled a total of $6,348.00 from the Central Elementary School PTO.

DeLuca faces a preliminary hearing on September 27 at 1:30 p.m. with Judge Kirtland presiding.

She is free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Calls to Franklin Area School District for comment were not immediately returned.
