Franklin-based State Police say the crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. on Interstate 80 westbound near mile marker 29.7.

Police say a tractor trailer driven by 50-year-old Donald Frances Perkins, of Cleveland, North Carolina, was traveling westbound on Interstate 80, drifted off the roadway, and struck the driver’s side of a parked tractor trailer.

After hitting the parked truck, police say Perkins lost control of the tractor trailer and traveled approximately 69 feet westbound before crashing into a tree and catching fire.

Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
