Venango County Recipe of the Day: Black Forest Waffles

Black Forest Waffles


1 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
3 tablespoons shortening
1-3/4 cups cake flour
6 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, separated
1 cup milk
1 – 21 oz. can cherry pie filling
Chocolate sprinkles


~In a small bowl, beat cream until it begins to thicken. Add confectioners’ sugar; beat until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until serving.

~In a microwave, melt chocolate and shortening; stir until smooth. Cool slightly.

~In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

~In another bowl, whisk egg yolks and milk until blended. Stir in chocolate mixture. Add to dry ingredients; stir just until moistened.

~In another bowl, beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold into batter. Bake in a preheated waffle iron (according to manufacturer’s directions) until set.

~Serve with whipped cream and pie filling, and top with sprinkles.

~Makes five (6-3/4 inch) waffles.
