Venango County Voters Won’t Need ID to Vote in Primary

| May 21, 2013

VENANGO COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – Venango County voters will not be required to show photo identification to participate in today’s primary election.

Poll workers can ask to see identification, but voters will be allowed to cast ballots, as usual, even if they lack those documents.

If the voter ID law were enforced, voters without ID’s would have to cast provisional ballots that would count only if they proved their identity afterward to local election officials.

First-time voters will have to show a photo ID; however, that has been required for over 5 years.

Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. today for Venango County’s primary elections.

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson halted enforcement of the law in the general election, as he ruled the state failed to make it possible for voters to easily obtain ID’s before the election.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the voter ID law last year, without a single Democratic vote, which caused a heated debate on the constitutionality of the law. A lawsuit challenging it is set to begin on July 15.
