Walter J. Kellogg, 97, of Asheville NC, formerly of Clarion, PA, passed away July 16, 2018, in Asheville, NC.

Born November 22, 1920, in Franklinville, NY, he was the son of the late Barton A. and Helen Laidlaw Kellogg.

Walter began his career with Bell Telephone as a station installer in 1940 and held a number of positions of increasing importance and in 1968 became chief switchman in Clarion. He held that position until his retirement in 1976.

In 1942 he entered the service where he served as a Technical Sgt. in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and Hawaii during WWII. Mr. Kellogg was active in community affairs in the Clarion area. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Salvation Army Service Club, American Legion, Clarion Lodge No 277, F&A.M., Eden Royal Arch Chapter Coudersport Consistory and was past president of the Pennsylvania Oil Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He served as past president and director of the Kiwanis Club in Clarion, he was active with the Boy Scouts and in 1957 was instrumental in improvements made to the former Camp Coffman Boy Scout Camp. He spent many years promoting and chairing the car show in the Autumn Leaf Festival. He was a member of Bell’s Telephone Pioneers of America and 100,000-mile safe driving club.

Walter enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips to Canada and later spending time at camp with friends and family.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Kellogg of Fort Collins, CO, and Kevin Kellogg of Clarion, and a daughter Barbara Kellogg Varnado of Austin, TX; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-granddaughters, and his faithful companion Buddy, his cat.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Vivian Parker Kellogg, eldest son Walter Jay Kellogg, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, and two sisters, Ella Raymond and Gloria Saiers.

Walter and Vivian Kellogg will be buried together in the NC Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
