Walter Otto Krumich

Walter Otto Krumich, 91, of Seneca, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Born February 1, 1921 in Solothurn, Switzerland, he was a son of the late Otto and Bertha Fleury Krumich. The family immigrated to Pittsburgh in 1929.

Walter attended Taylor Allderdice High School, and played flute in the Duquesne Orchestra and with the Pittsburgh Opera company.

He served in the Army during WWII in the South Pacific. His ship was attacked and he rescued a fellow soldier by swimming to shore with him. After serving for nearly three years with the 298th Infantry Regiment in Guadalcanal, he won a position in the Army Band stationed in Hawaii in 1945.

Later he worked at Mosaic Tile in Zanesville, Ohio, Kresge’s in Oil City and he retired as a field engineer from Sun Oil Company in Pittsburgh. Walter built most of the Sunoco stations in western PA, western NY and Ohio.

Walter’s interests included playing and teaching flute, architecture, photography, collecting pictures and information of county courthouses, and making sundials that were geographically correct. He loved to work in the outdoors and was an avid swimmer. He coached his children to be musicians and was available to play football and baseball with his sons.

He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City, where he served as an usher and played flute on occasion.

He married Marian Donley on July 3, 1948 at Good Hope Lutheran Church, she survives.

In addition to his wife, surviving are their children, Beth (John) Orris, John (Amy) Krumich, Mark (Charlene) Krumich and Eric (Aimee) Krumich; his grandchildren, Marianne (Christoph) Kasch, Julie (Jacob) Kosker, Kathe (Jim) Barlow, Lisa (Jef) Cass, Matthew, Willem, Phoebe and Kaelen Krumich; and his great grandchildren, Isabella Cass, Annaliese Kasch and Hazel and Heidi Kosker.

Walter is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Loffel of Bern, Switzerland; and two sisters-in-law, Pat and Charlotte Donley.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Michael, his brother Kurt Krumich, his brother-in-law John Donley, and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Orris.

There will be visitation at the Morrison Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

There will be an additional viewing at Good Hope Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 to 11 am.

Funeral Services will be held in the Good Hope Lutheran Church at 11 am Saturday with Rev. Philip Scherr, officiating.

Entombment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
