The students receive a 40 minute lesson every week in which they study proper playing techniques, as well as note reading and music theory. The students learn from a lesson book and have opportunities to play for the class as an individual or in small groups.

The goals of the lessons are to expose the students to the joys of playing the keyboard, as well as the work that goes into becoming a keyboard player.

Instrumental lessons also enhance logical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as physical dexterity and coordination.

It also serves as a way to inspire students to take lessons beyond what the class can offer and can help parents determine if making the investment of buying a keyboard for their child is a wise investment because their child has already had an opportunity to try the keyboard first through the school.

Mr. Brian Rosen is the 5th grade music instructor at West Forest Elementary.
