VENANGO CO., Pa. (EYT) – Those dreaming of a white Christmas this year may still have some hope.

According to Bill Modzelewski, of the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh, today is the day that could bring a bit of that frosted Christmas magic many people are hoping to see.

Modzelewski told exploreVenango.com, “The best chance (of snow) we have is Sunday or Sunday night when there will be a low-pressure system moving through.”

On Sunday evening, the forecast calls for 50% chance of rain and snow showers before 9:00 p.m. then a chance of snow showers later in the night with a low around 28 degrees. The new snow accumulation is expected to be less than a half inch.

There is a possibility of snow showers on Christmas Eve day, mainly before 8:00 a.m. with a high temperature near 32 degrees. On Christmas Eve, there is a 30% chance of snow showers again before 10:00 p.m. with a low temperature around 23 degrees overnight.

On Christmas day, the forecast shows a 20% chance of snow showers after 2:00 p.m. with a high temperature around 33 degrees.

While the chances of any accumulation of snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are low, according to Modzelewski, the low temperatures should at least allow any snow from Sunday to stick around.

Records show that the first snow of the year often occurs in December in our region, though this year the snow made its first appearance in November. The average snowfall for the month of December is about eight inches.

Though snow is more common in December, that still doesn’t guarantee a white Christmas, which is technically defined by an inch or more of snow. In our area, a white Christmas only occurs about one in every ten years or so. Traces of snow on Christmas day, like we may see this year, are more common, but still only occur about 38 percent of the time.

The last white Christmas on record in the region occurred in 2002 when the region saw about 1.8 inches of snow on Christmas Day.
