Winter, An Opportune Time to Visit the Ancient “Christmas Trees” of Cook Forest

| December 22, 2014

gateway zCOOKSBURG, Pa. (EYT) – Winter is the perfect time to experience the ancient “Christmas trees” of Cook Forest.

The Forest Cathedral, a National Natural Landmark, has centuries-old Hemlock and White Pines, some that have trunks as much as five feet thick and tower almost 200 feet in the air.

Its trees have been almost untouched since it’s birth in 1644 after a wildfire. The preservation of the forest is largely attributed to the Cook family whose efforts have saved more than 6,000 acres.

In its perfect stillness, winter is an opportune time to experience this snow-laden forest.

There are nearly 52 miles of hiking trails. Each of the marked trails offers a unique outdoor experience.

There are also three acres of sledding slopes and scenic cross-country ski trails in the park.
