Frigid Temperatures, Snow Predicted for Region

| January 4, 2018

VENANGO CO., Pa. (EYT) – As winter tightens its grip, weather forecasters are predicting more frigid temperatures and snow across the region in the next several days.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting one inch of snow on Thursday with a high temperature of 13 degrees and wind chill values as low as -5.

On Thursday night, snow showers are likely with a low around 0 and wind chills down to -12.

On Friday, the forecast calls for a high near 7 degrees and a low on Friday night around -1.

The forecast calls for a high of 7 degrees and a low of -4 at night on Saturday.

Temperatures are supposed to moderate to the upper 20’s by Sunday, but a chance of snow showers is forecast each day.

To the east, the NWS is predicting heavy snow through Friday for the Mid-Atlantic Coast northward to New England Coast.

Also, heavy lake effect snow for the Upper Great Lakes is forecast.

If this winter storm tracks closer to the coast, it could mean more snow, while a track farther east could mean less snow.

This system has the potential to produce strong, damaging winds, possibly resulting in downed trees and/or power outages.

Winter Storm Watches and Warnings are in effect from north central Florida northward through eastern New England.

According to a cnn.com report, from Maine to Florida, every East Coast state has at least one weather advisory, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, or blizzard warning. That’s 1,500 miles of severe weather alerts.

Measurable snow fell in Tallahassee, Florida, for the first time since 1989.

The unusually frigid conditions sweeping Florida led to the closures of Florida State University and Florida A&M University on Wednesday.

They also forced the temporary closures of Orlando water parks and prompted authorities to open dozens of emergency shelters.

In Pensacola, the weather turned fountains into ice sculptures and froze the top of an above-ground pool.

At least 11 people in the U.S. have died this week in cold-related deaths, according to officials.

Five deaths were reported in Wisconsin, four in Texas, one in North Dakota, and one in Missouri.

The Texas deaths included two homeless people in Houston who were exposed to freezing conditions.
