Work Release Inmate Takes Detour, Climbs Out Window When Police Arrive at His Apartment

SUGARCREEK, Pa. (EYT) — A Venango County Prison inmate on work release detoured to his residence instead of going on a job search.

Thomas “Tommy” Hazlett was granted permission to go on a job search on November 29. Two known correction officers were assigned to follow him.

According to a criminal complaint, instead of going on his job search, he went to 9 Crestview Apartment 408, The Franklin Commons, also known as Crestview Apartments.

The correction officers went to Apartment 408 and knocked on the door. A female voice stated, “Hold on a minute.” Jennifer Hazlett answer the door, the complaint states.

When the correction officers asked her, “Where’s Tom?” She answered, “Not here, you can come in and look.” When they asked again, she repeated, “Come in and look,” the complaint indicates.

At that time, a correction officer received a phone call from Chief McKenzie stating that a known individual had seen Tom climbing out of the window of Apartment 408, the complaint continues.

The correction officers searched the area around Crestview Apartments and did not find Tom, the complaint states.

A correction officer looked in the woods and found him. He was placed into custody where he was escorted back to the Venango County Jail. He is facing escape charges, according to the complaint.

Police say 24-year-old Jennifer Ann Hazlett, of Franklin, was arrested, arraigned, and placed in the county jail for hindering apprehension and a parole violation.
