| August 15, 2018

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Experience the vibrant energy and deep serenity of Indian music with world-renowned musician, Ustad Shafaat Khan, returning to the Barrow-Civic Theatre on Wednesday, August 29.

The performance is at 7:30 p.m.

Audiences can expect a musical experience that harmoniously blends timeframes and cultures. The first half of the concert, titled East Meets West, is devoted to classical Indian music from the 16th century to the present. In the second half, Khan will be accompanied by musicians Beledo (Flamenco Guitar), Coco Bastien (Drums/Vocal), and Rosa Lynda (Tanpura/Dance) for a modern fusion of eastern and western music.

Khan began performing publically at the age of 11 in the King’s Lynn Festival in Britain. Since then, he has distinguished himself by being the first known artist to have attained simultaneous excellence in performing the historical Indian instruments, the sitar, surbahar, and tabla. He has performed at many prestigious concert halls, music festivals, and universities throughout the United States, India, America, Europe, China, Russia, and Japan, and shared stages with some of music’s greatest legends, including Stevie Wonder at the Bonnaroo Festival and Ray Charles at a televised concert in Germany.

He was presented the Professional Excellence Award for an outstanding musician, performer, and teacher by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and performed his own composition, “River of Strings” at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia with the Western Symphony Orchestra. He has released three albums produced by the famous Dr. Deepak Chopra, all of which will be available at the concert.

As a leading exponent of music, he has taught at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of South Asian Regional Studies, and was invited as an artist in residence to Lafayette College in Easton, where he taught a course in World Music. Currently, he teaches in-person lessons from his home near Philadelphia. In addition to sitar and tabla, he can adapt the teaching of Indian classical music to other instruments, such as esraj, harmonium, keyboard, violin, guitar, cello, and more. His students travel from as far as North Carolina, South Carolina, Nevada, Washington, New York, and Delaware.

Recently, he started offering his lessons via Skype. He also uses his talents to help others by raising money for various charities, including concerts for world peace, flood victims, disabled children, battered women, and tsunami victims, among other causes.

International reviews of Maestro Khan’s performances include “astonishing, intellectual, and poetic” (The Washington Post), “a star in the world of classical music” (Chandigarh Tribune India), “absolutely superb” (The Times London, England) and “Indian music at its top level” (The Shoestring in Pacem, USA).
