OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — Four local girls are setting up a lemonade stand to raise money to send care packages to active duty service members who are stationed overseas.

Sammie Bartlett, of Oil City, wanted to have a lemonade stand during the upcoming block yard sale on July 16 through July 18 to raise money for a charity; however, she wanted to see how and where the money was used.

After receiving many suggestions, Sammie decided to do something for active duty service members, with all of the money raised to buy items for care packages to be shipped to a currently deployed Pennsylvania National Guard unit.

According to Michelle Shiley, Sammie was inspired by two people in her life to pick this donation: her grandpa Richard Palm, who was a Quarter Master 2nd Class, and Matt Shiley, her friends Corabel and Lilly Shiley’s father, who is currently a Sergeant in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

After deciding on the charity, Sammie then asked her friends Corabel and Lilly Shiley to help her with the lemonade stand, and they were excited at the opportunity to participate.

The Shiley girls said they were motivated to raise money by their dad Matt, their Uncle Ron Shiley, who was also a Sergeant in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and their Uncle Rey Santiago, who was a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy

Another friend of Sammie’s, Katie Luxbaucher, joined in to help collect money for the troops, as one of her grandfathers, Dave Royer, was a Spec 5 in the United States Army, and her other grandfather, Bill Luxbacher, was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp.

The girls will have lemonade, cookies, and cupcakes available to pick up for a donation from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., during the yard sale on Thursday, July 16, through Saturday, July 18, at 309 Cowell Avenue in Oil City.
