5th annual Oil Region Strongest Man Competition on Tap

OIL CITY, Pa. – Saturday August 3 at 10 AM marks the day for the 5th annual Oil Region Strongest Man competition. The event will be held in Justus Park, Oil City, PA – rain or shine.

The Oil Region Strongest Man is a strongman competition. Strongman is a sport that tests many different strength aspects to find out who indeed is the strongest man. The contest consists of 5 different events that test the competitors grip strength, pressing strength, and back strength.

Some of this year’s events include the Axle Press, where one must clean and press a truck axle over his head, the Yoke Walk, where the competitor lifts 800 pounds and walks it 50 feet, and Atlas Stones, where contestants lift stones ranging from 245 pounds to 430 pounds over a 4 foot bar. There will also be a side contest to load the 430 atlas stone. The competitor that loads the 430 pound stone will take home $375. Other events include the Farmers Walk and the Frame Deadlift.

Farmer's Walk

There will be 35 competitors coming in from states as far away as Illinois. There are presently 9 local competitors signed up. Some of our local contestants include Mark Minnicks, Butch Huey, Sam Schwabenbauer, Matt Amendola, and Tyler Hanna. The middleweight open class will have 2 of the top 10 middleweights in the nation competing. Tim Filus a heavyweight from Illinois will try to loading the 430 stone. Also competing from Illinois is Kim Baum. Kim competed in the Arnold Classic in the Strongwoman Fitness contest last year and took 3rd place in the world.

The competition is free to the public and is expected to last about 4 hours. All proceeds benefit the Vo-Tech robotics club.
