coronavirusSEATTLE, Wa. (EYT) — Health officials say a coronavirus patient in King County, Washington, died on Saturday.

The death is the first from coronavirus COVID-19 in the United States.

“It is a sad day in our state as we learn that a Washingtonian has died from COVID-19. Our hearts go out to his family and friends,” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement.

“We will continue to work toward a day where no one dies from this virus.”

During a Saturday afternoon press conference, President Donald Trump said the person who died was “medically high-risk.” The person was later described as a man in his late 50’s.

Officials also said the man was not known to have traveled recently, which means he likely contracted the infection in the U.S.

A total of 66 cases have been confirmed in the United States as of Saturday.

Coronavirus has killed more than 2,900 people worldwide, with the majority of the deaths occurring in mainland China. There have been more than 85,000 global cases, including infections on every continent except Antarctica.
