Clarion Students Won’t be Penalized for PHEAA Funds Delay

| August 23, 2015

clarion-uCLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Clarion University President Karen Whitney says students will not be penalized for funding delays connected to the state budget impasse.

The stalemate has delayed an estimated $420 million in PHEAA education grants expected to be distributed to 150,000 Pennsylvania college students.

In a statement today, Dr. Karen Whitney, president, Clarion University, said:

“With the state budget not yet approved, distribution of state PHEAA funds will be delayed. With no penalty or late charge, the university will extend the payment period on tuition, fees and university-affiliated housing that would be covered by PHEAA. Those funds will be processed once the commonwealth’s budget is finalized and PHEAA has received its 2015-16 funding.”

Whitney noted that the delay in disbursement of state-funded awards will not affect the timely disbursement of students’ federal, private and university-funded awards, scheduled to begin September 1, 2015.

“We will also provide a letter regarding this policy to any student eligible for PHEAA funds if they need it for off-campus housing.”

“Clarion University remains firmly committed to helping our students obtain funding to assist with book and living expenses during state-budget negotiations.”

Whitney encourages Clarion University students to contact the Student Financial Services Office, go to the lobby of Becht Hall, or call 1-800-672-7171, opt #2, with any questions.
