CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. (EYT) — The Cranberry Area School District is holding a safety preparedness drill in April.

High school principal Ritt Smith said the simulated “lockdown drill” will be held the first week of April with state police.

“After that, there will be an assembly with the students,” Smith said. “The state police do this for area schools to see how they are prepared and to offer tips and suggestions on how to be ready in the event something happens.”

Cranberry, like most schools, keeps its doors locked during the school day, and visitors have to request permission to get inside.

“I think our staff does a good job of reading kids and seeing how they are doing,” Smith said. “Not necessarily for potential shooters, but for signs of trouble they may be experiencing.”
