Crawford County Man Accused of Murder Facing Additional Charges for Armed Robbery of Erie Gas Station

| November 15, 2019

ERIE, Pa. (EYT) – A federal grand jury in Erie has indicted a former resident of Cochranton on charges of Hobbs Act robbery and using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced on Tuesday.

The two-count indictment named 21-year-old Jack Elijah Turner as the sole defendant.

According to the indictment presented to the court, on August 11, 2019, Turner robbed a Kwik Fill gas station at 3360 West 38th Street in Erie at gunpoint.

The investigation leading to the indictment was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Millcreek Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The Millcreek Police Department also filed robbery and related charges against Turner on August 13 in connection with the same alleged robbery through Magisterial District Judge Laurie Mikielski’s office.

While Turner has yet to be arraigned on those charges, he is still facing two counts of criminal homicide and other crimes for the alleged killing of his stepmother and his half-brother at their Randolph Township home in August.

Turner is accused of the fatal shooting of 49-year-old Shannon Whitman, and 10-year-old Darrin Whitman, on August 10 at the Whitmans’ home located on State Route 198 near Guys Mills.

Shannon and Darrin Whitman were each killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell determined their deaths as homicides.

Turner remains lodged in the Crawford County jail without bail.

He is currently scheduled to go on trial during Crawford County’s March 2020 criminal trial term.
