Dempsey Middleton Dupree, Ph.D., of 232 N Fifth Avenue, Clarion PA, passed away October 28, 2012 at home his home after a lengthy battle with cancer and myelodysplasia (MDS).

Born September 14, 1931, in Charleston SC, to Mid and Alice Dupree, both deceased, Dempsey grew up in Summerville, SC. He first attended Columbia Business College before joining the U. S. Air Force in 1951, and serving in Korea through 1953, then choosing to stay in the Michigan Air National Guard from 1954-57. He was the only member of his family to attend a university and received both his Master and Bachelor degrees at the same time in 1958 from the University of Michigan, acquiring his Doctorate in 1965 from Michigan State University.

A dedicated father and dependable friend, his real love was learning and teaching. His career took him from interning at Peat Marwick Mitchell in 1956 to a 1967 Fellowship award with Arthur Anderson Co. All the while escalating his academic service from Assistant Professor status at University of South Carolina to, full professor when he came to Clarion State College (now University) in 1967. He retired with Emeritus Status in 1993.

During his professorship at Clarion University, he authored two textbooks in his field: “Accounting, A Learning Experience (ALEX)” 1973; and “Accounting Fundamentals” 1980; both published by Prentice-Hall.

Dempsey is survived by five children: Dal Dupree of Lantana, FL; Mark Dupree of Cumberland, MD; Holly Augustine of Waynesburg, PA; Cindy Dupree of Leesburg, VA; and Karen King of Bunker Hill, WV. There are also 16 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren as members of his descendant family. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara and her husband, Charles Frankovsky of Franklin, NC and a niece and two nephews.

On November 24th, a memorial celebration for Dempsey will be held at his home at 232 North 5th Avenue, Clarion Pa from 1:00 to 4:00, followed by the spreading of his ashes.

Because he enjoyed the beauty of nature, we would welcome flower bulbs, seedlings or perennials that will be planted in his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) or the American Cancer Society.
