Franklin Man Faces Additional Charges Related to Possession of Stolen Property

CANAL TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A Franklin man who already has several cases against him is facing additional charges related to the discovery of stolen goods in his possession.

Court documents indicate 23-year-old Brandon Samuel Smith was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Matthew T. Kirtland at 9:32 a.m. on Monday, March 23, on one count of first-degree misdemeanor receiving stolen property.

Unable to post $5,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Venango County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, with Judge Kirtland presiding.

The charge stems from an investigation into a burglary in Liberty Township, Mercer County.

According to a criminal complaint, on September 23, 2019, Mercer-based State Police were dispatched to a residential burglary incident in Liberty Township, Mercer County, where a victim reported his MIG welder, torches, torch cord, several welding tanks, and the registration plate from a motorcycle were stolen from his residence.

According to the complaint, on December 17, a warrant was served on Brandon Samuel Smith by the Franklin-based State Police, and the MIG welder belonging to the victim was recovered.

The complaint notes further investigation of Smith’s social media accounts revealed photos of the victim’s motorcycle plate, MIG welder, and welding tanks.

Smith was interviewed at the Venango County Jail on March 9. According to the complaint, he admitted to purchasing the items that had been stolen from the victim.

Court documents indicate Smith also has several cases against him related to burglary and theft of guns in the local area that are continuing to make their way through the common pleas court system.
