Gerald GatesGerald “Jerry” L Gates, 67, of Knox, joined his loved ones in Heaven on Monday January 30, 2017 at the Clarion Hospital surrounded by family.

Born June 27, 1949 in Alum Rock he was the son of Kenneth and Olive Elder Gates.

On February 21, 1970 Jerry married Lora Thomas who survives.

After graduating from AC-Valley, Jerry worked at the Knox Box Factory until being drafted into the Army in 1969. While in the Army Jerry served in Vietnam.

After returning home he served in the reserves for several years. Jerry worked at the Knox Glass Plant until it closed then drove truck until his retirement.

Jerry enjoyed spending time with friends and family especially in recent years Marcus Bowser and Michael Switzer. He was a self educated WWII Historian. He loved helping his boys on their farm and spending time with his wife Lori and their several cats especially Runt his favorite cat.

Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post 720, the NRA, the Clarion Rifle & Pistol Club, the Vietnam Veterans of America, St. Paul UCC, Edenburg Lodge 550 and he served as a District Deputy of the Grand Lodge.

Along with his wife Jerry is survived by two sons David (Lisa Bowser) Gates and Doug Gates both of Knox, a brother Robert “Bobby” Gates and his wife Roberta of Alum Rock and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents Jerry was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles and his father and mother in law George and Anna Thomas.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Wednesday and from 10 to 11 AM Thursday at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home 504 East Penn Ave., Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Ken Tack of St. Paul UCC officiating.

Interment will follow in the St. Paul Union Cemetery.

The Edenburg Lodge 550 will perform a masonic service for Jerry at 6:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

The American Legion Post 720 of Knox will perform full military honors.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials are made to Knox Area Ambulance Co., P.O. Box 636, Knox, Pa. 16232 or the Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital 150 Doctors Ln # 1, Clarion, PA 16214.
